The solar power industry started off strong in 2014, with impressive employment and adoption numbers across the U.S. As the year has progressed, the industry has only grown stronger, as according to a new report released by the International Renewable Energy Agency, the global renewable energy sector is one of the strongest job producers in the world.
More than 6.5 million people currently work in this industry, which grew 14 percent in 2013, the report stated. Adnan Z. Amin, the director-general of the IRENA, explained in the findings that the sector has seen more interest from employees, companies and government programs, leading to increased adoption and demand for renewable energy.
"With 6.5 million people directly or indirectly employed in renewable energy, the sector is proving that it is no longer a niche – it has become a significant employer worldwide," Amin said to The Guardian.
The report found that the highest job creators were the biofuels and solar photovoltaic industries, which accounted for more than 50 percent of the workers in this field in 2012. China posted the largest number of employees, but Brazil, India and the U.S. followed close behind.
