In some cases, women have been forced to put their own careers on hold in order to care for children due to the high cost of child care. As a result, there has been a reduction in the number of people employed in the industry, according to recent industry analysis.
Bloomberg reports that since June 2009, the employment rate in the childcare industry has dropped 1.8 percent. Another reason for the lower employment figures is that laid-off workers are able to stay home and look after their young ones instead of hiring someone to do it for them.
“Every time a child is withdrawn and childcare workers get laid off, that obviously impedes the recovery,” said Barbara Bergmann, an economics professor emerita at American University in Washington, in an interview with the news outlet. “The recovery depends on increasing the demand for goods and services,”
While there has been a cutback in the total number of people employed in the industry, certain certification programs allow people to get a better shot at finding a good career. In one recent statement, the ChildCare Education Institute said that those who had received online certification were eligible to work in the state of Wisconsin thanks to approval from the Wisconsin Professional Early Childhood Registry and the Bureau of Early Care Regulation
